The Royal Mint has recently released the popular Britannia in one ounce .9995 platinum in a classical design, symbolizing unyielding resolve and strength. This the second annual release of this coin.
As a way to establish order and provide a sense of unity, the Roman Empire personified conquered providences with female figures. When the Roman Empire crossed the channel to reach the British shores, Britannia first appeared on the coins of Emperor Hadrian over 2,000 years ago.
Restored to British coinage in 1672 during the reign of Charles II, she’s appeared on the coins of every subsequent monarch. Reassuring and resolute she’s a rallying point come crisis or celebration, an embodiment of our national pride. Instantly recognizable all over the world, Britannia resonates with international investors, a trusted symbol of the quality of British minting.
The coin’s reverse depicts Philip Nathan’s classic design of Britannia standing firm in the eye of the storm in a display of unyielding resolve and strength. Britannia appears against a radial sunburst design, adding to the beauty of the design and offering anti-counterfeiting protection. The reverse also includes the issue year, fineness and weight of the coin.
The obverse displays an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark against a guilloché background. It also shows the denomination of the coin,100 pounds.
The new coin is struck in 999.5 fine platinum in bullion quality.
