Austrian Mint produced its second silver coin in March with a design of a historic ancient castle that was used by Duke Leopold of Vienna to house the imprisoned king of England Richard the Lionheart. This release is the second of the Austrian Mint this year to celebrate the mint 825 years of excellence. This release will be further followed by another one later this year. The design of the three coins will be dedicated to mark three historic events that took place in the beginning era of the mint.
The first coin, which was produced in January, featured Duke Leopold of Vienna ready for battle. This coin portrays Wiener Neustadt which was built by Duke Leopold to house the English King.
Duke Leopold of Austria kidnapped King Richard of England in 1192 on the outskirts of Vienna when the latter was returning from the Holy Land. This happened after Duke Leopold and King Richard were involved in a dispute in 1191 after the fall of the city of Acre. Duke Leopold extorted the English people into paying a huge ransom for releasing their king. Duke Leopold used silver to establish the original mint in Vienna as well as the stronghold of Wiener.
