Jason, rightful heir to the throne of Iolcus, faced adversity when his uncle Pelias seized power. To reclaim his birthright, Jason embarked on a perilous quest to obtain the coveted Golden Fleece. Assisted by Greece's greatest heroes aboard the legendary ship Argo, he journeyed to Colchis. There, King Aeëtes set him impossible tasks, but with the aid of the powerful witch Medeia, Jason succeeded. Yet, upon their return, Pelias refused to yield, prompting Medeia to enact a grim vengeance. Their flight led them to Corinth, where Jason's ambition led to tragedy, as Medeia's love turned to bitter hatred, resulting in a devastating act of revenge.
On the reverse side of the coin you will find Jason, Argo, fiery bulls, a dragon, golden wool, Medeia and many other mythical details. The obverse side, which is common to the whole cycle, presents ancient ships, temples and harpies and especially the Mediterranean Sea formed by transparent enamel. All this is surrounded by Hellenistic decoration.
