The Maltese cross is a unique symbol consisting of four “V” or arrowhead-like indented quadrilaterals that meet at a central point, forming right angles. Symmetrically, each arm of the cross extends into two outward-facing points. This emblem, which dates back to the 16th century, is an evolution of the earlier eight-pointed crosses. It is predominantly linked with the Knights Hospitaller, also known today as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and is thus emblematic of the island of Malta itself.
The 1/10 oz Maltese Cross Gold BU coin produced by the Central Bank of Malta bears this emblematic cross, celebrating Malta’s storied past and cultural legacy.
