The Maltese cross is a cross symbol composed of four "V" or arrowhead-shaped concave quadrilaterals converging at right angles at a central vertex, with two tips pointing outward symmetrically. It is a heraldic cross variant that evolved in the 16th century from earlier forms of eight-pointed crosses. Despite being most closely associated with the Knights Hospitaller (Order of St. John, now the Sovereign Military Order of Malta) and, by extension, the island of Malta.
