American Gold Buffalos, a relatively new coin, were first minted by the United States in 2006. Introduced to compete with international bullion of higher purity, Buffalos are .9999 (24 carat) bullion, unlike America’s pre-existing Gold Eagle, which is 91.67% (22 carat). In 2008, fractional varieties were introduced, but all other years have maintained a standard 1-ounce piece with a $50 face value. The design features a rendition of the classic U.S. Buffalo Nickel, with the Indian head profile on the obverse and the American Bison on the reverse.
